Mountain Biking Tour

Bike Tour 2026

In our always-connected, “wired” world, many teens rarely get the chance to unplug and experience nature in a meaningful way. This week-long mountain biking adventure offered exactly that—a chance to step away from screens and step into creation. When Jesus sought time for prayer and reflection, He often withdrew to quiet, natural places. It’s our hope that as these students rode mile after mile through breathtaking landscapes, they also found moments of stillness, growth, and spiritual renewal. The journey began on April 26 in the mountains of Kentucky and Tennessee under the leadership of Dr. Byron Graves.

On their first full day, the group tackled the 22-mile Grand Gap/John Muir Trail loop—an ambitious and exhilarating start. Day two brought even more adventure: the Collier Ridge Loop in the morning followed by the West Bandy/Duncan Hollow Loop in the afternoon, totaling around 20 miles. Though intense thunderstorms rolled through overnight—and more were expected—the group enjoyed safe and beautiful riding conditions during the day. By day three, the riders took on the Leatherwood Overlook and North White Oak Overlook routes, covering another ~22 miles and climbing over 2,000 feet. Along the way, they encountered some incredible sights from nature, including a timber rattlesnake, a scarlet tanager, and blooming rhododendrons—reminders of the richness and diversity of the natural world.

Day four combined challenge and exploration: a morning ride on the Chestnut Ridge Loop followed by a hike to the stunning Twin Arches. By this point, the group had logged around 80 miles of mountain biking in just four days! They were also treated to the unforgettable sight of several black bears. Everyone was in great spirits after a group meal at Pizza Hut on their last evening there. The group returned to Berrien Springs on May 1. A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Byron Graves, AU music professor and former AA Band and Handbell director, for envisioning and planning this memorable experience—one that will surely leave students with lasting memories (and yes, a few sore muscles!). Deep appreciation as well for his dedication in preparing students throughout the semester and for coordinating the logistics and volunteer support that made this outdoor education tour possible.
